How to compare RBT & BT jobs

RBT, BT or para: check the actual requirements

RBT stands for Registered Behavior Technician, a BACB certification for supervised behavior-analysis work. Employers also use titles such as behavior technician and para. Those titles alone do not establish the credential needed for a job. Ask what you must hold before starting, whether training is provided and which training costs or hours the employer covers.

Compare paid hours, not just the hourly rate

Two jobs with the same advertised rate can produce different weekly pay. Ask how many hours are scheduled, whether those hours are guaranteed, what happens when a session is cancelled and whether documentation, meetings or travel are paid. For example, $25 per hour for 20 paid hours is $500 before taxes; the same rate for 30 paid hours is $750. This is an illustration, not a salary estimate or an advertised opening.

Choose a work setting that fits your day

For home-based roles, ask how far apart clients are and whether gaps between sessions are paid. For clinic roles, ask about shift length and assignment changes. For school-based work, clarify school breaks and summer availability. The setting label does not tell you the full schedule; confirm the terms for the specific opening.

Get supervision details in writing

Ask who provides ongoing supervision, how support is available during sessions and whether meetings are paid. If you are also seeking credential-related fieldwork, discuss it separately: confirm the agreement, eligible activities, cost and responsibilities with the supervisor. An employer’s “supervision included” label is not a guarantee that hours qualify.

For current credential details, consult BACB RBT certification information. Find A Para is independent of the BACB.

Common questions

Can I apply without RBT certification?

Read the employer’s stated requirements. A BT or para title does not guarantee that certification is optional. Ask whether the opening accepts trainees and which requirements must be completed before paid work begins.

How do I find part-time RBT work near me?

Open the job filters, choose your state and compare each opening’s location and schedule. Ask whether the posted hours are immediately available or depend on a future assignment.

Does it cost anything to apply?

Browsing and following an employer’s application link are free on Find A Para. Employers handle applications and hiring decisions; we do not guarantee interviews or employment.
