STARTING IN ABA

BT vs RBT: which jobs can I apply for?

RBT means Registered Behavior Technician, a BACB certification. BT means behavior technician, a job title employers use. A BT opening can still require certification. Read the actual requirements rather than assuming “BT” means no experience needed.

What to check in each opening

Do I need certification?Check whether the employer accepts trainees or requires an RBT credential.Check whether an active RBT credential is required on your first day, or whether the employer offers a path to certification.
Is training paid?Ask which training hours, assessments and fees the employer covers. “Training provided” does not settle those questions.
Are the hours ready to start?Ask for the actual location and schedule, available paid hours, cancellation policy and start date.

New to ABA? Look for explicit trainee eligibility

Try titles such as behavior technician, ABA therapist or trainee, then read the qualifications. “Entry level” and “paid training” are useful clues, but neither guarantees that you qualify. Check the required education, experience, credential, transportation and work location before applying.

If a requirement is unclear, ask: “I do not hold RBT certification yet. Does this opening accept applicants in my situation, and what must I complete before paid work begins?”

Training completion is not RBT certification

The BACB’s current pathway includes eligibility checks, qualifying 40-hour training, an initial competency assessment, an application and passing the examination. RBTs practice under ongoing supervision. Requirements changed in 2026; confirm that a course and assessment meet the current rules before paying or enrolling.

Start with the BACB’s RBT certification page and current RBT Handbook. These are the credentialing authority’s sources, not a Find A Para training offer. Find A Para is independent of the BACB.

Compare the working week, not just the rate

Use the weekly pay calculator with the hours and cancellation terms the employer actually gives you.

Find work where you can travel

Start with your location, then compare the setting and schedule. The job title alone cannot tell you whether the commute or available hours fit.
